History of the Copper Mule Mug & Moscow Mule
These days Copper Mule Mugs seem to be a common staple in everyone’s household. They are the perfect way to enjoy an ice cold Moscow Mule or Big Machine Vodka Mule. But why are these mugs favored by all and where did they originate from?
In 1941, a woman named Sophie Berezinski immigrated from Russia to the United States carrying 2,000 solid copper mugs from her father’s copper factory known as the Moscow Copper Co. Sophie designed the original copper mug that is now famously linked to the Moscow Mule cocktail. In order to search for a buyer for the 2,000 copper mugs, Sophie walked into Cock ‘n’ Bull pub where she met two men who were trying to figure out ways to sell ginger beer and vodka. After spending hours of experimentation, they developed a drink with the carbonated taste of ginger beer and the kick of vodka which was housed in a solid copper mug that kept the drink cold. Even more significant they felt the mug enhanced the flavor – and that’s how the Moscow Mule was invented!
